More than 2,000 prisoners who raised their voice against the military government in Myanmar have been released. Myanmar has begun the release of a total of 2,296 prisoners from across the country, according to data released by the military-run State Administration Council (SAC). These prisoners included 1,839 men and 457 women, who were arrested. Activists detained during protests against a military coup in February and journalists who released news on the demonstrations are also included in this. Inmates were taken by buses from Yangon's Insein prison, where their friends and family had been waiting for their release since morning. The head of the Yangon Regional Prison Department, Jae Jae, confirmed that more than 720 people had been released from prison. According to media reports, political prisoners have been kept in Yangon's Insein prison for decades.
A total of 721 people from the Yangon region, 711 from the Mandalay region and 22 from Naipyutaw have been released. The latest figure comes after U Zaw Htay, who served as the spokesman for the deposed government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar. These men were freed from military custody in the capital Naypyitaw after being detained for more than four months.
Significantly, after the coup in Myanmar in February, a large number of people took to the streets to protest. During this time people had also raised the demand for restoration of democracy and release of politicians. The military government shot dead more than 700 people while taking action against the opponents. Not only this, the army had also massacred many cities of the country.
