Oscar 2023: These films sent to Oscars were renamed, this title was kept from Shah Rukh Khan's 'Paheli'
Oscar Awards 2023: Indian films compete in the Oscar Awards every year except for a few years. Official entries are sent from India in the Best International Feature Film category. This time the Gujarati film Chhelo Show was sent but got out of nominations.
The 95th Academy Awards are being held on March 12. Telugu film RRR has successfully covered the journey till the nominations. The song Natu Natu from the film is nominated in the Best Original Song category of the Oscar Awards. This is the first time that a song from an Indian film has been nominated in this category.
All eyes are now on whether the song Natu Natu wins the Oscar or not. However, Natu Natu is being considered as a strong contender. Entry is sent every year from India in the Best International Feature Film category of Oscar Awards.
Gujarati film Chhelo Show was sent this year, although the film could not go beyond the short list of Oscars. Chhelo Show was released in English as The Last Show. It was sent to the Oscars under the name of The Last Show. This has happened in the past too, when the titles of entries in Indian languages were kept separate from the original title.
Movies shipped with English titles
• Satyajit Ray is considered the genius filmmaker of Indian cinema. Several of his films were sent as official entries in the Best Foreign Language Film category. In 1959, his Apoor Sansar was sent to Oscar under the name of The World of Apu.
• In 1963, Satyajit Ray's film Mahanagar titled Metropolis was sent to the Oscars.
• Devanand's classic film Guide featured in the 1965 Oscar ceremony with the title The Guide. It was directed by Vijay Anand.
• In 1967, Chetan Anand's last letter was included in the Oscar race, but it was titled - The Last Letter.
• Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Majhli Didi, Elder Sister, entered the 1968 Oscar race with the title.
• MS Sathyu's Garm Hawa is considered an iconic film of Hindi cinema. It was sent for the 1974 Oscar Awards and was titled Hot Wind.
• In 1978, Satyajit Ray's classic Hindi film Shatranj Ke Khiladi was sent for the Oscars. It was titled The Chess Players.
• In 1999, Deepa Mehta's 1947- Earth arrived to show her power at the Oscars. It was titled Earth.
• In 2005, Shah Rukh Khan's film Paheli, directed by Amol Palekar, was included in the race for the Oscar Awards. Its title was already titled Riddle, which is its English translation.
• In 2008, Aamir Khan's directorial debut film Taare Zameen Par became a part of the Oscar race. Its title was changed to Like Stars on Earth.
• In 2009, the English translation of the title Harishchandrachi Factory, a biopic film on the father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke, was sent to the Oscars. This movie is in Marathi.
• A 2011 Malayalam film Adaminte Makan Abu was titled Abu, Son of Adam. In 2021, the Tamil film Koozhangal Pebbles was included in the Oscar race.
All these films failed to reach the nominations.
No entry was sent from India in these years
Till 2022, 55 films have been sent from India for Oscars, out of which 34 are Hindi. This has also happened many times in the Oscar Awards ceremony, when no entry was sent from India. Indian films were not sent to compete in the Oscar Awards in 1960, 1961, 1964, 1979, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1981 to 1983 and 2003.
