Pope Francis visited Assisi, the birthplace of one of his namesake saints. The saint was a nature lover. The Pope on Saturday appealed to give up fossil fuels, saying the older generation did not know how to save the earth and ensure peace. He asked the youth to work to save the earth and make the world economy more accountable towards the poor. The world is looking at him with hope.

During his brief visit on Saturday to the mountain town in central Italy, Francis addressed some 1,000 youth. Some of the youth gathered there were economists while others were associated with environment-focused start-ups. Participants from all over the world participated in this event. Among them was a woman who told the Pope how she and her husband were helped to escape Afghanistan by an organization called The Economy of Francis after the Taliban takeover last year, inspired by the life of St. Francis. Pay attention to the poor and other needy.

The Pope said there was a need for a world economy that expressed "a new vision of the environment and the earth". There are many people, businesses and institutions that are doing ecological transformation. We need to move on this road and do more. The Pontiff cited an urgent need to discuss the model of development. He said now is the time for renewed courage in abandoning fossil fuels to accelerate the development of zero- or positive-impact sources of energy.

The Pope told the youth that our generation has left you with a rich legacy, but we do not know how to protect the planet and are not achieving peace. He lamented the lack of creativity, optimism, enthusiasm and told the youth that we are thankful to God that you are here. You will not only be here tomorrow, but you are also here today.
